Coleago Consulting’s new white paper “India, a different perspective. Strategic insights into how to generate a return on investment in India” highlights the opportunities presented by India’s forthcoming auctions for 3G and broadband wireless access (BWA) spectrum. It argues that, with the low rate of fixed line penetration, the potential for wireless broadband access is very significant.

Oliver Wyman’s CMT State of the Industry 2010 report

February 8th, 2010

Oliver Wyman’s CMT State of the Industry 2010 report is subtitled “in Search of New Value Growth” and, amongst other issues, focusses on how IPTV operators can compete with well-established cable and DTH operators, how mobile data operators can escape the squeeze between flat rate tariffs and growing usage, and how fixed network operators can reduce costs to protect profits in a mature market. The report also analyses CMT companies by their “Shareholder Performance Index”, which Oliver Wyman argues is superior to other performance measures through adjustments for risk and volatility.

DotEcon have released a study that was prepared for ComReg, the Irish telecoms regulator, which considers re-licensing of spectrum in 900MHz band as existing GSM licences expire. This band has recently been liberalised by the EU to allow technologies other than GSM. The study proposes an auction process with detailed description of auction procedure, pricing and licence conditions.

The Technology Policy Institute’s report “Enabling Efficient Wireless Communications: The Role of Secondary Spectrum Markets ” highlights another way in which more spectrum can be released for innovative uses. After discussing how to define the secondary market for spectrum, it estimates the volume and value of this market in the USA from the FCC database of frequency allocations. The report also includes a compilation of market size estimates for the fast growing M2M (machine to machine) service.
