Tom Rebbeck’s presentation to the Cambridge Wireless mobile broadband event earlier this month, “The challenges facing mobile operators in implementing a mobile content strategy”, includes some interesting data on mobile broadband users. Mobile broadband usage declines from 35% in the 18-24 age group to less than 10% among the over 55s. Internet access is the most popular service for smartphone users – over 60% use it – while less than 20% use work related apps. Over 20% of Apple smartphone users would change provider to gain access to different apps – more than with any other smartphone provider.

January 31st, 2011Accenture Consumer Electronics Products and Services Usage Report
January 31st, 2011While Accenture’s new report addresses consumers’ purchases of electronic products, it does contain some interesting insights into consumers’ use of telecoms services. The report was based on surveys in USA, France, Germany, Japan, Brazil, Russia, India and China. Email and web searching are the two most popular activities, ahead of TV/video, with significant proportions spending more than 15 hours each week on these activities. Between 10% and 25% of consumers purchased smartphones in 2010, apart from China where around 40% did so. China is also the outlier when it comes to planned electronics spending in 2011 – over 30% of Chinese consumers plan to spend over $3000 this year compared to 5%-15% on the other countries.

Deloitte TMT predictions for 2011
January 31st, 2011Three of Deloitte’s four predictions this year relate to mobile data and the technologies that are competing to service all of the smartphones, tablets and netbooks that are roaming in the wild. Deloitte predicts that many carriers will delay rolling out 4G networks by making their existing 3G networks work harder e.g. by using 3.5G (HSPA+). Secondly public WiFi networks will carry a larger proportion of traffic, particularly mobile video. Thirdly, Deloitte predicts that retailers will begin to offer free WiFi to customers, both to entice customers to linger and to provide product and stock information. Finally, despite improvements to the speed, cost and availability of video calling, Deloitte predicts that it will remain a niche service.
