While Accenture’s new report addresses consumers’ purchases of electronic products, it does contain some interesting insights into consumers’ use of telecoms services. The report was based on surveys in USA, France, Germany, Japan, Brazil, Russia, India and China. Email and web searching are the two most popular activities, ahead of TV/video, with significant proportions spending more than 15 hours each week on these activities. Between 10% and 25% of consumers purchased smartphones in 2010, apart from China where around 40% did so. China is also the outlier when it comes to planned electronics spending in 2011 – over 30% of Chinese consumers plan to spend over $3000 this year compared to 5%-15% on the other countries.

Three of Deloitte’s four predictions this year relate to mobile data and the technologies that are competing to service all of the smartphones, tablets and netbooks that are roaming in the wild. Deloitte predicts that many carriers will delay rolling out 4G networks by making their existing 3G networks work harder e.g. by using 3.5G (HSPA+). Secondly public WiFi networks will carry a larger proportion of traffic, particularly mobile video. Thirdly, Deloitte predicts that retailers will begin to offer free WiFi to customers, both to entice customers to linger and to provide product and stock information. Finally, despite improvements to the speed, cost and availability of video calling, Deloitte predicts that it will remain a niche service.

Yankee Group’s annual predictions this year focus exclusively on the impacts from 4G. With 4G roll-outs already taking place, the Yankee Group makes 13 predictions for its impact on the mobile data landscape, and lists winners and losers for each prediction. It will be no surprise that Google and Apple appear several times among the winners, while network operators frequently appear among the losers. The report includes forecasts of 4G take-up, smartphone sales and app revenues. The predictions are available as 1 hour podcast with accompanying slides, and as an Acrobat document.

The UMTS Forum’s new white paper “Recognising the Promise of Mobile Broadband” highlights the main challenge faced by mobile operators – the forecast exponential growth in mobile data usage. (For example Cisco’s VNI projects over 100% annual growth rate up to 2014). The paper discusses responses to this challenge, including new business models and cost reduction, as well as looking forward to the development of higher bandwidth technologies and the requirement for further spectrum.

Oliver Wyman’s CMT State of the Industry 2010 report is subtitled “in Search of New Value Growth” and, amongst other issues, focusses on how IPTV operators can compete with well-established cable and DTH operators, how mobile data operators can escape the squeeze between flat rate tariffs and growing usage, and how fixed network operators can reduce costs to protect profits in a mature market. The report also analyses CMT companies by their “Shareholder Performance Index”, which Oliver Wyman argues is superior to other performance measures through adjustments for risk and volatility.

Deloitte’s 2010 predictions start with mobile: the continued rise of smartphones and the move to mobile VOIP. Increased mobile data usage may strain the capacity of existing networks but Deloitte thinks that use of better technologies will avoid congestion. However it also foresees a change from “all you can eat” to metered mobile data plans in North America. The report also predicts a more relaxed approach to reliability and further steps to reduce carbon footprints.

There was a stellar line-up of mobile CTOs at the “Cellular 25” event last week – all of the UK networks were represented, as well as Ericcson, Motorola, Nokia Siemens, Qualcomm and infrastructure provider Arqiva. Some of the presentations are not yet available online, but those already available include John Cunliffe of Ericsson on the importance of mobile in reducing carbon emissions and the prospects for machine to machine (M2M) communications. (Congratulations to Geoff Varrall of RTT for spearheading the event.)

Mobile won’t be able to achieve the exciting future mapped out by these telecom gurus without plenty of its raw material – spectrum. Aegis System’s recently released report on the digital dividend, prepared for the Greek regulator EETT, focuses on one source – re-allocating spectrum formerly used by terrestrial TV transmissions. The report discusses the technical issues involved as well as reviewing progress in Europe and elsewhere.
